Growing Alberta, 2005

Growing Alberta is a non-profit company which provides awareness and education on agri-food issues to consumers. The highly successful company has two main products, Harvest Gala and Food For Thought magazine. The project entailed market research on industry and government alignment and a business planning process for a new focus and approach. See www.growingalberta.com

Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes AACTI, 2005

We assisted AACTI in a provincial strategy and applied research plan to develop a new model to implement on a provincial system approach. Under recent Alberta regulation changes (2004), colleges can now actively pursuer applied research for Alberta benefit. The project developed a new multi-year plan based on several specific program areas.

Alberta Environmental Farm Plan, 2001 to 2005

Toma & Bouma assessed the opportunities and need for environmental farm planning in 2001. This assessment stimulated the formation of the Alberta Environmental Farm Planning Company. Since 2002, we have conducted strategic planning for this organization on an annual basis.

City of North Battleford, 2004

Toma & Bouma worked the planning department of the City of North Battleford to develop a long term strategic plan. The process involved extensive consultations with business, social agencies, local politicians, students and citizens to form a vision, mission and key strategic initiatives that will guide the city for the next 10 years.

Olds College Capital Campaign Plan, 2004

We assessed the readiness and capacity of the Olds College to undertake 5 new programs for significant capital investments. The included an internal review, development of specific case statements and market research including with government. We critically reviewed the proposals and concluded with a stewardship (fundraising) plan. A launch of the over $35m capital campaign was made in June 2005.

Alberta Institute of Agrologists National CPD Plans, 2004

A phased approach was used to understand the professional development needs of professionals in the agri-food and life sciences industries. Conducting workshops and interviews and reviewing the profession identified many examples where P. Ags. have made substantive impacts to the Canadian economy (e.g. Canola, cross-breeds, technologies). The AIA is now implementing a CPD program.

Alberta Beef Industry, 2002

The Alberta beef industry is the provinces' largest agri-food sector. As the sector continues to change, this in turn drives the need for organizational change. Toma & Bouma led a review process that examined needs, stakeholder's interests and comparative structures.

Saskatchewan Agrivision Corporation, 2002

We facilitated a review of the corporate plan towards new initiatives and a sustainable funding model. The plan was accepted and has been implemented.

Alberta Pork, 1999-2004

Since 1999, Toma & Bouma have analyzed the financial crisis facing pork producers due to low prices on three occasions (1998, 2002 and 2004). In 2004, we led a strategic planning process on behalf of Alberta Pork.

Olds College Center for Innovation, 1999

The Olds College required a novel business plan to be developed for a general concept. TBMC undertook internal readiness reviews and developed a public-private plan which resulted in new $10m investments into the College. The center was operating only 10 months after the initial project start.

Pursuit of Quality, 1997

In response to the challenge of building a $20 billion value added industry and a $10 billion production sector, Toma & Bouma developed a detailed strategic plan for the province. Thirteen recommendations dealt with food safety, environmental sustainability, regulatory review, infrastructure, research and innovation capacity, market development and human resources. A novel planning process including scenario analysis and one scenario identified the potential for a food safety trade barrier, like BSE.

Alberta Milk, 1997

Toma & Bouma conducted a producer representation study that examined the structure of the Alberta milk industry. The report provided three options and a recommendation that producers be bettered represented in their own industry. As result, the industry was restructured and Alberta Milk was formed to provide more effective producer representation.

Changing Course, 1996

This foundation study reviewed how Alberta fit within the global food system and benchmarked policies and programs against the EU, the USA and others. On-site research identified new models for recommendations, which included the formation of AVAC Ltd., value chains, new research investments and a re-balanced department with more emphasis on value added.
