Institute for Food & Agricultural Sciences, Alberta (IFASA), 2003 to 2005

Toma & Bouma played the role to facilitate and author the business plan for the formation of IFASA. This initiative brings together the three key research and development institutions in Alberta: Alberta Agriculture & Rural Development; Alberta Research Council and the University of Alberta.

Biomass Assets in Alberta, 2005

We reviewed the supply and sources of biomass for new uses in bio-chemical, bio-energy and bio-products applications in the province. The project entailed a review of provincial reports and statistics and industry interviews to confirm corporate interest and issues in this new emerging industry.

R&D Needs of Oil and Gas Equipment Manufacturers, 2004

We completed a literature review of product design needs and conducted a provincial survey of 45 CEOs/ senior management on their current// future needs in equipment R&D. One of the challenges in the industrial sector is product design for efficient and competitive plant operations. The project was validated with CME and industry comments.

Alberta Bioproducts Science Priorities, 2002

We were involved in chairing a series of industry, research and government meetings and workshops in setting the priorities for the province. This work was carried out over an 8 month period and resulted in three focus areas- bio-based materials, bio-chemicals and bio-energy. A general development plan was created and a new organization was set up to carry the mandate (Bioproducts Alberta). Completed for AARI, Innovation and Science. See www.bioalberta.com.

Forest Biotechnology in Alberta, 2000

This project involved a review of the biotechnology issue with respect to Alberta forest industry interests and policy requirements. A benchmark of other jurisdictions was made to assess how the issues of forest plantations, fibre supply and competitiveness can be affected by biotechnology. Completed for Alberta Innovation and Science.
