j_bouma2Jerry Bouma has over 25 years experience in the field of strategic planning, marketing management, training communications and research within the agri-food sector. His experience includes 10 years as a management consultant with Deloitte Touche (formerly Deloitte Haskins + Sells) and 2 years as marketing manager with Maple Leaf Foods (Shur-Gain Feeds Division).

He combines a solid background as a strategic planner and has been at the forefront of many new innovations in the agri-food sector including the formation of AVAC; the Value Chain Initiative, the Alberta Environmental Farm Plan Company as well as the restructuring of several producer associations including the Alberta dairy and the beef industries.

Jerry has extensive project experience and has served as a manager on more than 500 strategic planning and marketing projects. He has considerable hands on operational experience in the implementation of business-to-business marketing and sales strategies. He has strong strategic skills and excels in the identification of market trends and the formulation of appropriate marketing initiatives. Jerry speaks on a wide range of agri-food subjects including agricultural policy issues, value-added strategies, marketing, value chain formation and business-to-business management.

Over the past year Jerry has:

  • Moved into the position as Chair of the Board of Northlands, which is Canada’s largest agricultural society. Northlands is currently undertaking an ambitious growth plan including a $150 million expansion to its trade show facilities.
  • Served on the board of Horse Racing Alberta and chaired the Marketing Committee for the past 4 years which developed the most successful horse racing marketing campaign in North America. The campaign just recently won the Best of CAMA (Canadian Agri-Marketing Association) campaign of the year award for the third year in a row.
  • Served on the board of the Little Potato Company – one of Alberta’s most exciting and fastest growing speciality food companies.
  • Been a member of City of Edmonton’s Mayor Task Force examining the feasibility for a new arena to replace or upgrade Rexall Place.

tomapicDarrell Toma is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Science (Resource Economics). He is a Certified Management Consultant and has attended the Banff Centre (Advanced Marketing Management). He has 30 years of experience in professional consulting with Deloitte Touche, two other consulting firms and his own firm.

In his prior position, he was Principal in Charge of the Edmonton Strategic Management Consulting group (7 staff). Since 1979, Darrell has worked on over 450 assignments concerning a wide variety of economic and management problems. He has experience in facilitation, business and strategic planning, industry market research and economic analysis. He also has much experience as a Board member with many organizations. He was President of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce, on the Canadian Chamber Board, board member on several professional Institutes, a research Institute and at the community level. Recent work has involved lean enterprise methods, alliances in technology commercialization, sector e-marketing at a provincial level, facilitation of a manufacturing consortium and economic development plans for regional growth.    

He has authored over 35 publications, presented over 150 speeches and has been featured as an expert on television, radio and in the press. He has worked in Australia, Canada, the USA, Korea, Egypt, Mexico and Hong Kong. He has industry experience in agri-food, professional services, government, manufacturing, oilfield services and small business. Client experience includes: Alberta Government, private businesses and CIDA among many others. He has published a book chapter on volunteer leadership, a book on best management practices, manufacturing best practices and a number of articles. He has been a keynote speaker in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Mexico, Toronto, Houston and in Sydney, AU, 

Recently Darrell has:

  • Completed his term as Past-President of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce after a 5 year leadership track
  • Been a Board member of Alberta Watersmart, a Calgary-based non-profit which is focused on water management technologies and information for improved use. The website www.albertawatersmart.com shows some of the staff activities and plans;
  • Been appointed as Senior Advisor to IICA- Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture, which has 35 member nations, including Canada. The IICA board members are the Ministers of Agriculture from the member countries.
